Black Belt Absolute Division Finals at the California Classic of BJJ Nov 15th, 2009 in Riverside, California Some of the Global Jiu-Jitsu Team from Costa Mesa was there competing and we managed to catch the Black Belts fights too. You can hear the mixed reactions of the crowd at the end. This file is edited to get it under 10 minutes for YouTube. I only removed long periods of guard game without passes, points or advantages. This stuff is important, but I had to take from somewhere. All points and advantages are left in the movie.

You can’t use another match to say “BJJ guys always do that shit.” The move is considered illegal, and therefore should have resulted in a point lost for Barnett. Cali Classic is a competition you really had to be at to understand how shitty it was. Hours to get matches, brackets made up on the spot. Volunteer bracket makers didn’t understand weight class.’ Score takers were kids on their nintendo DS’s, it was just bad. Refs would take lunch breaks, only allowing a match or two at a time. Bad.

I think I may be wrong on the rules of a heel hook. I was at the gym and Romulo mentioned something about the control foot position when going for a heel hook [the convo was unrelated to this match]. The foot in charge of hip control cannot pass to the middle of the stomach, or past a certain area across the hips.

OK I just saw Barnett on his last Dream fight. He’s a class act.

@legendof How do you say that a heel hook is on the same level as a groin shot? That’s a slap the face of every no-gi grappler, CACC wrestler who work on these moves every day and know how to defend them effectively and utilize them. I cannot stress enough that a hell hook is very dangerous and needs to be done in a controlled environment but as a catch-wrestler I cannot see how it isn’t something that shouldn’t be utilized if its there. And no, not position before submission. It’s about CONTROL

@legendof I am quite perturbed that you would put a heel hook on the same level as a groin shot. As someone who studies catch-as-catch-can wrestling and does no-gi grappling I feel that’s a slap in the face to all the guys I train with every day and we work on everything, including heel hooks. Just remember on heel hooks it’s all about rotation and believe it or not, position. CACC isn’t so much about positions as it as about control. I get you to do something you don’t want to, like a headlock.

legendof: to put a heel hook on the same level as a groin shot is quite a slap in the face to the people who train them regularly and with lots of skill. However, if you were to say that they were extremely dangerous and should only be used under supervision that would be warranted. Myself as someone who wrestled in high school and transitioned to catch wrestling do not understand the aversion you guys have to heel hooks. Rotation, rotation, rotation. It’s all in your rotation to defend it!

@prooc The same reason striking the groin is illegal in most combat sports, specifically boxing, mma, Muay Thai. It’s a cheap attack that takes very little skill.. If you’re going to ask someone a question, keep your opinions to yourself.

This was utter bs, Josh was up by one advantage. Look att Barral limping on that leg. Both are great fighters and Barral is the more techincal. But I hate when this brazilian shit happends when everyone storms that mats when some big named brazilian is about to lose or something similar. It was Josh’s fight.

Rominho won, anyone who says otherwise is either jealous or is on Josh Barnetts nuts.

@legendof Why do they have to outlaw heel hooks if it’s a grappling competition. It’s almost like a pussy way of admitting your art is flawed.

@FightingMoe Why do BJJ guys always do that shit. There almost always sore losers. There’s another video on here of Cruz throwing a fit because the judge awarded Monson the win.

@legendof That’s good to know. Honestly I couldn’t see the heal hook from across the mat, but I know those CSW guys are big on them so it doesn’t surprise me. I did ask a couple of the guys that were sitting there too and they didn’t mention it. Good feedback though. Thanks

Also, incase you’re curious about my credibility, I am wearing the white shirt alongside the people in blue and black shirts with the Yellow Writing on it. I am also a student of Romulo, but in no way am I bias. There was a lot of bs between those cameraman too. [they were talking shit to romo even as barnett helped him tape up]

The illegal move counts as a penalty, however, the ref did not count it as one. The commotion was over the illegal heal hook. Afterward, Josh Barnett apologized to Romulo and actually helped him wrap his foot up. There was no beef between romulo and barnett. Before the match one of my teammates said to romo [you're going to smash barnett] and romulo said [no, josh barnett is very good, he is no joke]. It was nothing personal, the commotion, just clearing that up.

No, what happened was, Josh Barnett put Romulo in an illegal heal hook. Romulo called it out to the ref [as you see during the middle of the fight].

It kind of looked like maybe Barnett had more advantage points…it also sort of appeared that the ref was about to declare Barnett the winner until everybody else jumped in to sway the decision. I can see both opinions though.
