@BFF305 andersons tkd and capoeira are non existant in the cage as they are both very low percentage non combat styles.Lyotos sucess hasnt revealed anything about karate as far as i can see as a single instance in16 years isnt evidence of anything.Any style that doesnt feature fullcontact sparring nor include grappling and wastes alot of time on kata and other crap is going to produce very few fighters but some people are great despite training

@kensei010 id say he will be defeated by shogun in the rematch if shogun gets a bit more agressive and goes for the finish with more conviction.Lyoto didnt look good in their last match

If someone can possibly beat Fedor. Machida might be that person.

karate is not for me, but good on him for sticking to what he believes in and not jumping on the muay thai/bjj band wagon. We need more guys like him in MMA.

“Karate is a life-long persuit”, rule no.1 of Shotokan.

First of all, I didn’t say anything about which style is superior. I’m simply saying that different styles with different tactics can be applied effectively depending on the fighter’s skill. Besides, at the end of the day MMA is still a sport. The basic styles taught in MMA didn’t start out as sports. real muay thai was originally a battlefield art. So was Tae Kwon Do and Jiu Jitsu which later became Judo which later became Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

@BFF305 no. its nothing to do with the superiority of the styles, its the superiority of the person. your an idiot though “traditional martial arts” cannot be highly effective in mma, theres just ONE superior fighter that trains all the time, in many different disciplines and you say that means that traditional martial arts can be highly effective? you obviously dont know anything about fighting.

I’m very sure that Lyoto has opened people’s eyes in the MMA world not just for Karate, but traditional martial arts in general. Traditional martial arts can be highly effective in MMA, but some people don’t look deep enough into certain styles to see their true potential. For example, we know Anderson Silva is a BJJ black belt & Muay Thai expert, but he’s also a black belt in Tae Kwon Do & is well trained in Capoeira.

the main differences with shotokan (JKA, SKI, etc.) training, reside in the tactics/footwork, updated conditioning, inclusion of circular punching and the judo/ jujutsu ground work. which are VERY MUCH needed. Hopefully coaches, masters and practitioners will REEVALUATE karate do, bringing us more mma fighters as Judo has. by realistic sparring & planned conditioning. since most tournaments are for points. and the mayority of karate teachers aren’t physical, educators, or certified trainers.

The most impressive thing about Machida is not his striking, it’s his footwork. Just watching his fights, he’s usually no longer there by the time his opponents’ strikes are at full extension, and he’s in position to do whatever he wants. The plyometric exercises probably add quite a lot to his already fast movement.
